Stoughton is located in eastern Massachusetts and is part of Norfolk County. With an area 26 square miles, Stoughton is home to a population of 26,962. The town was established as part of Dorchester in 1713 and incorporated separately in 1726. It was named after William Stoughton, the first lieutenant governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Stoughton was originally an agricultural community, but it later discovered the manufacturing of shoes, rubber, textiles, and machine tools. Today, the town’s economy is based on trade and services related to health care, shoe manufacturing, and light manufacturing. The town is accessible by car, bus, or train.
