Together with the cities Hull and Hingham, Cohasset was originally a part of Suffolk County until 1803, when those other two towns were separated from Norfolk County.
Cohasset has a total area of 31.4 square miles which was mainly surrounded by water. The climate includes hot, humid summers and mild to cool winters. The school district is home to approximately 1,500 students throughout Osgood and Deer Hill Elementary Schools and a combined middle and high school.

This historic site was first purchased by the American industrialist Henry M. Whitney in 1904. He and his association acquired much of the estate and gave 600 acres of it to The Trustees in 1933 as well as to the Thayer Woods after 10 years.
